Priest A centuries-long war between humans and vampires has devastated the earth’s surface and led to the establishment of a theocracy under an organization called The Church. Despite the vulnerability of vampires to sunlight and humanity’s technological advancements, the vampires’ superior power and speed meant they were impossible to beat until mankind sheltered them in giant city walls and formed a group of elite warriors, known as Priests, who helped turn the tide.
In the first scene, a group of Priests is seen entering the Sola Mira Hive but are ambushed by the vampires. When they try to escape from the hive, one of them is taken from behind and their leader attempts to get him back to safety, but is required to let him go and watch him dragged, screaming, back into the Hive. After a few years after, the majority of vampires were killed and the remaining were put in reservations. The war was over and the Priests were disbanded and replaced by the Clergy. Some people seek out ways to get out from the walls of cities.
Priest ( Paul Bettany) is approached by Hicks ( Cam Gigandet) who is the sheriff of the free town, Augustine. Priest finds out that Owen, his brother, and Owen’s girlfriend, Shannon (Priest’s girlfriend before being enlisted into the clergy) were mortally wounded in an attack by vampires and Priest’s niece Lucy ( Lily Collins) was abducted. Hicks asks for Priest’s help in the rescue of Lucy. Priest asks the Church to restore his authority. However Monsignor Orelas ( Christopher Plummer) the head of the Church, isn’t convinced by the myth of the vampire. He refuses to believe that everyone believes that the vampires are defeated. The reason for this is the fear of losing the Church’s authority. Orelas sends three priests and a priestess ( Mag Q) in order to bring the priest back.
Priest and Hicks are brought to Nightshade Reservation, where they encounter Familiars, humans infected by a virus which makes vampires subservient. After a bloody fight, the duo discovers that most of the vampires have taken shelter in Sola Mira, which was thought to have been abandoned following the war. Priestess who was part of Priest’s failed assault on Hive and Hive, is also a part of the group at Sola Mira. The group kills the Hive Guardian vampire, then discover that the vampires have created a new army and have dug a tunnel out of the mountain to a town called Jericho. Three other Priests are arriving at Jericho just as the night begins to fall and an armored train is arriving with the intention of unleashing hundreds of vampires upon the inhabitants. A powerful and mysterious human wearing a black hat leads the vampires ( Karl Urban). Black Hat kills all three Priests who refuse to accept his offer to join him.
The next day, Priest, Priestess and Hicks arrive in Jericho and discover Jericho is empty, and three priests who had died crucified. Priest and Priestess share an intimate moment when she confesses her feelings to her husband, hoping that now that Shannon has died the priest will not feel any more bound to her. Priest softly declines. Priest realizes that the vampires are using the trains to travel during the day, and then attack free towns by night, and the cities that are walled near the end of the line. Hicks believes the cities are also protected by the sun, however Priest states that the cities’ massive clouds of smoke and ash have permanently deprived them of sunlight. If the train crosses one of cities, there could be a massacre.
Priest is threatened by Hicks who is in love with Lucy and believes Priest will murder her if she’s infected with the vampires. Priestess informs Priestess that she isn’t able to as Lucy is Priest’s daughter and that Owen was Priest’s husband and father during Priestess’s capture by the Church. Lucy was not informed of her family history.
As Priestess scurries ahead to plant a bomb on the tracks of the railroad, Priest and Hicks board the train to save Lucy. The two men battle Familiars and vampires, until Black Hat finally defeats them just as they find Lucy. Black Hat is revealed as the priest who went missing in the assault on Sola Mira. After being captured by the vampire Queen, she offered his blood, making him the first hybrid Vampire-Human that is able to endure the sun. While Priest fights Black Hat, Lucy discovers the truth about her parents. In the tracks in front of the train, she fights several Familiars however one of them destroys the detonator for the explosives. Instead, she puts explosives on her motorcycle and then drives them into the train’s engine. The derailment explodes and eliminates all vampires. Black Hat is engulfed in fires. Hicks Priest, Priestess and Lucy manage to escape.
Priest is back in the city, and confronts Monsignor Orelas during Mass He informs him of the burning train that holds vampire bodies, but not the Queen’s. The priest then shocks the crowd with a headless vampire thrown on the floor. Orelas continues to doubt him, claiming that the war is over, even though the Priest insists that the war is just beginning. Outside of the city, the Priest meets Priestess, who confirms that the other Priests have been informed and that they will meet at a rendezvous point. Priest departs into the evening light.
